One of those rare talents who bucked the jinx of winning the Best New Artist Grammy (which she snagged in 1995), Sheryl Crow accrued an impressive canon over the span of a decade. Starting with this Missouri native’s twangy, Rickie Lee Jones-flavored 1993 smash “All I Wanna Do,” Crow has made her mark with songs such as the forward-looking “Every Day Is a Winding Road,” the pleading ballad “Strong Enough,” and the Beach Boys-flavored summer anthem “Soak Up the Sun.”

This former in-demand session musician’s talents also found her going down a country path by way of a classic duet with Kid Rock on the ballad “Picture,” which rubs shoulders with the wonderfully atmospheric “Home” and the put-up-or-shut-up sentiment of the life-loving “If It Makes You Happy.” Fans who are looking for new material get rewarded with two versions of Cat Stevens’ “The First Cut Is the Deepest,” one with a vintage Rod Stewart-like arrangement and a country version, featuring steel guitar. Also included is “Light in Your Eyes,” a gentle mid-tempo nod to the late George Harrison.

A distinctive, girlish voice, crisp, impeccable delivery, and an irrepressible sense of playful swing made Blossom Dearie one of the most enjoyable singers of the vocal era. Her warmth and sparkle ensured that she’d never treat standards as the well-worn songs they often appeared in less capable hands. And though her reputation was made on record with a string of excellent albums for Verve during the ’50s, she remained a draw with Manhattan cabaret audiences long into the new millennium.

Actually born with the name Blossom Dearie in the New York Catskills, she began playing piano at an early age and studied classical music before making the switch to jazz while in high school. After graduation, she moved to New York and began appearing with vocal groups like the Blue Flames (attached to Woody Herman) and the Blue Reys (with Alvino Rey). She also played ~censored~ piano around the city, and moved to Paris in 1952 to form her own group, the Blue Stars of France. Dearie also appeared in a nightclub act with Annie Ross, and made a short, uncredited appearance on King Pleasure’s vocalese classic, “Moody’s Mood for Love.” She recorded an obscure album of piano solos, and in 1954, the Blue Stars hit the national charts with a French version of “Lullaby of Birdland.”

After hearing Dearie perform in Paris in 1956, Norman Granz signed her to Verve and she returned to America by the end of the year. Her eponymous debut for Verve featured a set of standards that slanted traditional pop back to its roots in Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, and cabaret. Her focus on intimate readings of standards (”Deed I Do,” “Thou Swell”) and the relaxed trio setting (bassist Ray Brown and drummer Jo Jones, plus Dearie on piano) drew nods to her cabaret background.

On her next few records, Dearie stuck to her focus on standards and small groups, though her gift for songwriting emerged as well with songs like “Blossom’s Blues.” She performed in solo settings at supper clubs all over New York, and appeared on the more cultured of the late-’50s New York talk shows. Her husband, flutist Bobby Jaspar, made several appearances on her records, notably 1959’s My Gentleman Friend. After a recording break in the early ’60s, Blossom Dearie signed to Capitol for one album (1964’s May I Come In?), but then recorded sparingly during the rest of the decade.

Finally, in the early ’70s, she formed her own Daffodil Records label and began releasing her own work, including 1974’s Blossom Dearie Sings and the following year’s My Favorite Celebrity Is You. She also performed at Carnegie Hall with Anita O’Day and Joe Williams, billed as the Jazz Singers. She continued to perform and record during the 1980s, centered mostly in New York but also a regular attraction in London as well.

In the 1970’s, there were many hard rock/heavy metal albums that defined the genre during that decade. This was one of the best. This album’s quality is the main reason Boston is remembered so well today.

The band put together clean, fresh melodies and created some of the best sounding hard rock in history. Most bands had one or two hits per album, and then a few album track gems. Boston’s entire debut was exciting and fresh. It was the best hard rock album of 1976, and there was some stiff competition. Aeromsmith released “Rocks” that year, often seen as their best album. Kiss put out “Destroyer”, which has also been hailed as their greatest piece of work. Boston however, beat them all out this year. Every song on this record was a radio hit, and is still on classic rock radio today.

The album was originally scheduled for released on September 25, then November 13. “Uh-Ohhh!”, featuring Lil Wayne, was the first single off The Mirror. It debuted on July 31, 2007 and peaked at #69 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Other tracks recorded for the album included various tracks that, according to Jayson Rodriguez of MTV News, reflected on the criminal trial of Irv Gotti: “Hearsay”, “Love is Pain”, and “Father Forgive Me”. “Body”, featuring Ashley Joi, premiered in October and reached #71 on the R&B chart.

Ja Rule stated in a interview that there are seventeen tracks and only a few guest appearances because he wanted The Mirror to be about him. In an interview with SOHH, Ja Rule commented on the album:

“ The whole industry is so focused on beefin’ with each other — it’s like the WWE of rap right now. I’m stepping out of the arena. I don’t want to be a wrestlin’ rapper. Somebody’s got to come in and make it positive. You have to make records that make people feel like having a good time. This record is like my confessions, I’m shedding my skins. The Mirror is your only real moment of truth. It’s the place where everybody can go and be honest with themselves. ”

Ja Rule released a free mixtape, Atkins Files Vol. 1, to fans via his MySpace page late in 2008 which contained songs originally slated for The Mirror.

Addressing the leak of tracks from his original version of The Mirror, Ja Rule announced in a 2009 interview with HipHopDX that he would record an entirely new album, The Mirror: Reloaded. Gotti explained to MTV News that the delay of the album was for “trying to craft a classic LP.” “Hollywood” dropped in late April; Micaela Hood of the Miami Herald called it “an ode to some of his favorite peeps like Oprah and President Obama”. On July 31, 2009, the original version of The Mirror was released online as a free download.

Stereophonics frontman Kelly Jones was still licking some serious wounds due to the breakup of his 12-year relationship with his girlfriend and a fallout with a best mate. The band’s 2001 release, Just Enough Education to Perform, briefly touched upon his broken heart; however, Jones’ darkest period came later as the band played countless sold-out gigs across Europe throughout late 2001 and 2002. Jones found himself personally and professionally isolated — emotionally distant from his bandmates and best friends, drummer Stuart Cable and bassist Richard Jones, and creatively exhausted. However the fire that had made this band a major force in the post-grunge English rock scene still burned. Stereophonics’ fourth album, You Gotta Go There to Come Back captures Jones’ soulful journey, and the band’s classic rowdy rock style is as sultry as ever. While their three previous albums exuded ~censored~ just for the sake of being ~censored~, You Gotta Go There to Come Back doesn’t care to be so snide. Sure, the band’s classic swagger remains an integral part of its overall appeal, but moving beyond that silly behavior has somehow affected Jones and his band. Cable became a father during the recording of this album while Richard Jones settled down and got married. Perhaps Jones craves a bit of stability as well? His confidence is on par throughout these 13 blues-rock-tinged songs as his life unfolds through words. “Jealousy” and “You Stole My Money Honey” are the album’s more vexed moments. “Climbing the Wall,” layered in acoustic guitars and horn and string arrangements, and “Nothing Is Precious at All” continue Stereophonics’ psychological sifting with warmth. “Madame Helga” is the punch in the face Jones has been waiting to deliver. Heart-pounding musicianship from the band itself makes this swanky gospel number an album standout and a career staple. It’s a song that Stereophonics have been wanting to make for years, and the overall fierce presentation finds the band at its best. Stereophonics are consistent with their craft, and You Gotta Go There to Come Back highlights the band’s growing talent as musicians, but the fact is that they’ve only made good records up to this point. They have yet to make a really great record, but that’s not to say Stereophonics don’t have what it takes. You Gotta Go There to Come Back is a solid rock effort, and in due time, the band will have its epic.

Review: Metalcrypt (5+/5)

What can I say about this album that hasn’t been said many times before? It’s an absolute classic in all aspects and every metalhead should own this album, no exception. This was King Diamond’s second release, and with it he abolished a lot of the raw production that had been carried over from Mercyful Fate with King Diamond’s first solo album, “Fatal Portrait”. Not only was the production a lot smoother, but there was a great leap in songwriting that (in my opinion) has still hasn’t been topped with any of his later offerings (but don’t get me wrong! They’re all excellent albums, too!) So, what makes this album so necessary in a metalhead’s collection? If you aren’t familiar with the unbelievable range that the King possesses, please have someone pour oil on you as you light yourself on fire because you’ve basically already wasted your entire life without experiencing one of the best vocalists in Metal history. As astonishing as the dual shredding of Andy La Rocque and Michael Denner were in this album, it would only be half as good without the incredible atmosphere brought about by King Diamond’s voice.

About the music though, it’s absolutely top notch in this album. On many tracks the incredible solos, riffs and guitar harmonies brought about by the two brilliant guitarists in this album are jaw dropping. The track where their skill is most appreciated is in “The Family Ghost”, which contains two solos one after the other by each guitarist. It’s one of the most killer Heavy Metal tracks ever! Not to forget that drummer Mikkey Dee can keep one hell of a catchy beat in not just that track, but in all of them. There are a few acoustic passages too in Abigail, one in “The 7th Day of July 1777″, which is smack middle of the album. This track plays an important role in the concept of the Abigail story being told (or rather, sung), acting as a turning point of events from the two main characters moving into their new house to being pregnant by the “~censored~ daughter” Abigail which occurs in the next track if I’m not mistaken. This song however is important, telling the story of Abigail being a dreadful omen.

With an album with a plot so compelling as this one, it’s just like a book. The lyrics are cleverly written, which provides a lot of depth of the characters within this concept album. With musicianship that is almost unable to be topped, the unique falsetto of King Diamond being revealed its true potential (and also with the use of other vocal effects that are just as excellent) and the best horror concept ever in an album, it’s hard for me not to give this a 5+. This album is more than amazing from the first track to the very last second of the last.
